Verina was born on January 28, 1865 in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended State Normal School in Columbia, South Carolina. Having entered the Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1884, Verina graduated in 1888, receiving a M.D. Realizing the serious need for medical attention in the Black community, she started her practice in the Black community surrounding Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
